Background

Ah musuems! Such fascinating places with abundance of history! Ornate Objects, cherised gems, speak wonders of our past. And there is no better place (perhaps in the world) Than the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Opportunity

The art is alive, and it's even better with an awareness of the work. Unfortunatly, these tiny litle cards, or huge, long, complicated cards, are incredibly hard to focus on, especially when the piece in front of you is so compelling!

So why not learn from the piece directly?

Exploring

With the goal in-mind I set out to explore the met, to find the perfect room, and object to work with. I had my Quest, tested lighting, and was in awe of all of the different posibilities. I ended up settled on an Urus from the 16th Century, one of the first objects I saw that day, given its momumental stature, sorrounding work, and quiet location in the museum (so no one would make fun of me (or take pictures) wearing a headset)

Process

I began by taking scans of the room, since I wanted it to be a room scale experience, and then I zoomed into and took detailed shots of the direct object. Then when I got back to the office, I opened Sketch and Unity, and started exploring different directions, including selecting objects around the room, and walking close to learn more about the focused object.

One direction I was fascinated with was using material slots, and a UI switcher to highlight the different parts of the model to focus on, this corrosponded with a side panel. Here the user could see more about the detail of the art without having to leave the work.

Testing

When it was time to build and run in the museum, it was a fascinating experience, and the project worked as intended, and was going great! Up until a guard, told me I can no longer where the headset in the museum, and work on the project. But he did say I was the first person in the museum to wear an XR Headset. A big accomplishment, for what will hopefully become a mainstream part of everyone's future.
